Leeds United sign Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach

Leeds United have signed Switzerland centre-half Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach on a three-year deal, ending his 11-year spell in Germany.

Leeds confirmed on their official site that the 29-year-old joins on a permanent deal and becomes their fourth signing of the summer window.

OneFootball reported the fee as "£6.8m (€8m) plus up to £1.7m (€2m) in add-ons" and the contract as three years. Neither Leeds nor Gladbach published a fee, so that number is press reporting rather than a club announcement. Per OneFootball, Elvedi arrives as a direct response to Sebastiaan Bornauw's move to Hamburg, which Leeds had agreed earlier but only sanctioned once a replacement was secured.

The club-published numbers are substantial. Leeds state Elvedi made 364 appearances and scored 19 goals for Gladbach, including 318 Bundesliga appearances — eighth on the club's all-time list and the most by any non-German player. Bundesliga.com adds 17 Champions League games, 24 DFB Cup ties and five Europa League matches since he arrived from FC Zürich in 2015.

Gladbach head of sport Rouven Schröder told Bundesliga.com: "Legend is a word you shouldn't use lightly, but Nico Elvedi is a true Borussia legend! Losing someone like that is painful, both on the pitch and on a personal level." Elvedi said: "It's not easy to leave, but I feel the time is right for me to experience something new. I want to say thank you for 11 years that have shaped me enormously."

One detail the sources disagree on: Leeds list 73 Switzerland caps, Bundesliga.com lists 79. Both cannot be right and neither has corrected the other, so we leave both figures rather than pick one. Where they agree: Elvedi played every minute for Switzerland at the 2026 World Cup — all six matches, per Bundesliga.com — as they reached the quarter-finals. He debuted for Switzerland in 2016 aged 19 and has featured at every major tournament since, including Euro 2016.

The clearest logic behind the move is on the touchline. Elvedi played under current Leeds manager Daniel Farke at Gladbach in 2022/23, making 34 appearances and scoring three goals. For a promoted side, this is a low-noise, high-sense signing: 300-plus Bundesliga appearances, six full World Cup matches this summer, and a defender who already knows the head coach's system.

Leeds open the 2026/27 Premier League season away at Nottingham Forest on Saturday 22 August — the earliest Elvedi could make his debut.
