Newcastle sign Bosnia full-back Amar Dedić from Benfica on five-year deal

Newcastle United have signed Bosnia and Herzegovina full-back Amar Dedić from Benfica on a five-year deal. He will wear the No 37 shirt at St. James' Park.

The 24-year-old is Newcastle's sixth senior addition of the summer, the club confirmed. Newcastle's official announcement did not disclose a fee; Sky Sports News reported the deal to be worth £29.5m — a figure neither club has confirmed.

Dedić previously played under Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle in Austria, at both FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg. "Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me," he said. "We know each other well, he knows what I can bring on the pitch."

Jaissle said the full-back brings "both defensive and attacking qualities", describing him as "athletic, aggressive and technically very good, but also has a lot of potential to develop further". Sporting director Ross Wilson called him "a modern full-back" capable of playing on either flank who "strengthens our squad straightaway".

Born in Austria, Dedić came through LUV Graz and Sturm Graz before joining Salzburg's academy in 2015 and turning professional four years later. He made 95 appearances for Salzburg in all competitions, with a loan spell at Wolfsberger AC, before a 2024/25 loan at Marseille (10 Ligue 1 appearances) and a permanent move to Benfica last summer. He played at St. James' Park for Benfica in last October's Champions League tie.

He has 31 caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina, three of them at this summer's World Cup.

Newcastle open the 2026/27 Premier League season at home to Liverpool on Sunday 23 August.
