Official: Joao Cancelo returns to Barcelona on a three-season deal

Barcelona have officially confirmed the return of João Cancelo on a three-season contract. It is the Portuguese full-back's third spell at the club, and his first as a permanent signing rather than a loan.

What Barcelona announced

The club's official site states the Portuguese "joins on a permanent transfer basis from Al Hilal and signs for FC Barcelona for three seasons," running to 30 June 2029.

One wording difference worth flagging: Barcelona describe it as a "permanent transfer basis from Al Hilal," while ESPN reports it as a free transfer after Cancelo terminated his Al Hilal contract. Neither source states a fee, so we do not quote one.

His two previous spells

Barcelona's own announcement lists both:

• 2023/24, on loan from Manchester City under Xavi Hernández — 42 appearances, 4 goals, 5 assists.
• January to June 2026, on loan from Al Hilal under Hansi Flick — 23 appearances, 2 goals, 4 assists.

Sixty-five appearances across two visits. He needs no bedding-in period.

Why he came back

ESPN quotes Cancelo directly: "The difference is that during my first season here I had a sour taste in my mouth because I couldn't win any title with Barça. I had to fulfil that dream."

The player

A full-back who has played mostly on the left in his recent spell, Cancelo, 32, has previously played for Benfica, Valencia, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City and Bayern Munich on loan. Barcelona's site credits him with 73 Portugal caps, two World Cups and the 2018/19 Nations League.

For Hansi Flick the value is versatility, plus the fact Cancelo already knows the system from the second half of last season. ESPN notes he is Barcelona's fifth signing of the summer.
