Official: Curtis Jones leaves Liverpool for Inter Milan after 16 years

Curtis Jones has completed a permanent move from Liverpool to Inter Milan after 16 years at the club, signing a five-year contract. Liverpool receive a £25.7m fixed fee plus a 10 per cent sell-on clause.

Both Liverpool and Inter have now announced the deal, closing out the club-to-club agreement reported on 20 August.

The numbers, in two currencies

• Sky Sports: "Liverpool are set to receive a fixed fee of £25.7m plus £4.28m in add-ons." Sky adds: "Sky Sports News understands a 10 per cent sell-on clause has been inserted in the deal."
• ESPN: "The Serie A club will pay an initial €30m for the 25-year-old, with the potential for a further €5m in performance-related add-ons."

The two figures are quoted in different currencies but describe the same deal; they do not contradict each other.

ESPN reports a five-year contract at Inter. Liverpool's own statement describes it as a "permanent transfer from Liverpool FC to Internazionale, subject to international clearance."

16 years, 228 appearances, six trophies

Per Liverpool's official announcement, Jones joined the Academy at U9 level, stayed 16 years, made 228 senior appearances, scored 22 goals and won six major trophies including two Premier League titles.

Liverpool also recalled that at 19 years and 5 days old he became "the club's youngest ever captain", leading Liverpool's youngest ever team to victory over Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup.

Sky Sports adds: "After making his Liverpool first-team debut in the 2018/19 season, Jones appeared 228 times for the club, scoring 22 goals."

Why he still had to leave

Plenty of appearances, never a settled starting place. ESPN reports Jones "has struggled to nail down a starting spot during his time at Liverpool, but did make 49 appearances last season." With one year left on his contract, this summer became the moment to move.

Inter, meanwhile, have been shopping in the Premier League: per ESPN, Jones joins John Stones and Djed Spence, both of whom moved to San Siro this summer.

The farewell

Jones: "After 16 years, it's time to say goodbye. I came here as a kid with a dream of playing for Liverpool, and I've been lucky enough to actually live that dream."

Liverpool: "All at Liverpool FC thank Curtis for his dedication and contribution to the club across the last 16 years, and wish him good luck in the next chapter of his career."

At Inter, Jones told the club website: "It's a club that I've wanted to join for a while now so I'm excited." Head coach Christian Chivu said at a news conference on Friday: "I'm very happy that Jones has joined us."
